Prana Yoga Center Himalayan Salt Room

Geneva, IL

Project Summary

If you are looking for an example of a yoga studio that’s carrying the day in the competitive market, look no further than Prana Yoga Center.

Seeking ways to continue supporting their students’ journey toward a vibrant life, led the owner to realize that the center wasn’t growing in the direction of meditation in a way that supported its mission. We suggested renovating an underutilized yoga studio to turn it into a stunning Himalayan Salt Room. The salt room sets the tone and environment of calmness and relaxation that enhances meditative and restorative yoga practices. It creates a better experience for their students to meditate.

Designing with Dennis was a really a creative process. I would explain my goals and obstacles over coffee. Then I’d see the creative energy running through his mind. He could quickly draw a mock-up, a rough budget, and a timeline. Right there! With 40 years of experience, he is brilliant with his mental toolbox.

Construction Details

Prana’s Himalayan salt room was custom-designed and constructed using over 4000 Himalayan salt bricks imported from Pakistan’s Himalayan Mountains. Frames were built to contain the nominal 5lb. 4”x8”x2'‘ bricks.

The salt bricks are beautifully illuminated from behind with 3000 kelvin lighting (warm light) that draws out the natural beauty of the salt, generating a beautiful ambient glow and a calm and serene environment. Remote-controlled and dimmable, the soft lighting warms the salt bricks that disperse negative ions into the environment to provide relaxing health benefits. An isolated room heating and cooling system allows for these salt ions to remain in the room.

Unlike salt caves, the floor is not covered in salt in order to provide stability for a variety of instructor-led and individually-guided healing practices including meditation, restorative yoga, and sound therapy.

Working with the owner, the salt room installation was designed so that it can be removed and taken to another location if desired.

Classes in the Salt Room Increased Prana Yoga Center’s Revenue

With the addition of the new Himalayan salt room, Prana Yoga Center added 8 meditation, yin yoga and restorative yoga classes per week and a weekly workshop, increasing attendance by 576 monthly student visits, a growth of 30%. Classes in the salt room are consistently full with students signed up on waitlists.

Furthermore, these classes have not taken away attendance from classes in the center’s other yoga rooms. The salt room has not only helped to increase membership sales, but has led the owner to implement an additional membership option so members can take more classes per month.

Feedback has shown that clients love the new salt room. They state they sleep better, feel calm and content upon leaving, and can self-soothe. Overall, the new ambiance of the Himalayan Salt Room has elevated the center from just another yoga studio to a premier healing and wellness center.

This space has changed the entire experience for the students. Students are relaxing more deeply in class and sleeping more peacefully at night. There is also a significant difference in my own experience teaching. I am better focused and calm when in the space, giving me the opportunity to be more present for the classes.

A huge bonus from the business perspective is that the number of students has increased. All around big benefits.
